POLICE
HOLD LEAGUE LEADERS
Police
belied their lowly league position with gutsy battling
display to earn a fully deserved draw against league
leaders Rugby Town.
The first shot on
target came from West Mids on five minutes when Andy
Reece set up Paul Shaw who had a fierce drive from
the edge of the box well saved by visiting keeper
Ian Brookes.
Rugby then enjoyed
most of the first half possession but Police keeper
Tony Workman, standing in for the injures Darren
Carmell was not called into serious action until the
42nd minute when he had to make a good save from a
close range shot from Lee McBain.
On the stroke of
half time Workman brilliantly saved another close
range effort, this time from Pete Poole. As the ball
ran loose, Lee Lavary should have put Rugby ahead be
he shot wide of a gaping net.
In an end to end
second half, Rugby went ahead on 61 minutes when
substitute Ian McGregor got on the end of a deep
cross from Dave Aston to score with his first touch
of the ball, with a close range shot giving Workman
no chance.
Police refused to
lie down and equalised on 67 minutes when Dave
Harnett, looking good in his new role at left
full-back, swung in a deep cross to the far post
where Mark Delaney scored with an angled header
across the face of the goal.
