CARMELL
WORKS OUT HIS ANGLES
Darren
Carmell starred for the Police against one of his
former clubs as West Mids came from behind for their
second draw of the opening two games of the season.
The first big save came on eight minutes, when Ross
Knight burst through and his 15 yard shot forced Carmell
into a finger tip save for a corner. West Mids best
first half move saw Ollie Latchford and Paul Webb
combine well to set up Gavin Smith who had his 25
yard drive tipped over by Alvechurch custodian Andy
Harper.
Alvechurch started the second half brightly but Carmell
was again on fine form cutting out a searching cross-cum-shot
from Matthew Bourne. The visitors went ahead on 56
minutes, when slack Police marking allowed a Brett
Clarke cross to reach Lee Colvin who fired home from
close range.
Police
then showed their fighting spirit when equalising
on 63 minutes. Lee Wharmby mis-hit a 20 yard pass
straight to Alvechurch full back Wayne Mitchell, but
as the defender dithered on the ball, Wharmby kept
running and dispossessed him and crossed to Kevin
Usher who's first time volley from 15 yards, flashed
into the bottom corner of the net giving the keeper
no chance.
Alvechurch
thought they had won the game two minutes from time,
when a long clearance from Harper ran through to Keith
Rostill who's angled cross shot, beat Carmell, hit
the inside of the post and bounced back into Darren
Carmell's arms.

PEARSON'S EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DARREN CARMELL
In an after match EXCLUSIVE interview, Darren Carmell
told me, "I did not bother diving for the shot
that hit the post because I had worked out the angles
and knew it would bounce back to me".
Scoop's
comment - Didn't David Seaman do that in the World
Cup against Brazil?
