MIDLAND MIDWEEK FLOODLIT CHALLENGE CUP

Tuesday 22nd October 2002

West Midlands Police 2
Nuneaton Borough Reserves 3

BOROUGH NET LAST MINUTE EXTRA TIME WINNER

This game was typical cup tie that was settled in the last minute of extra time when Borough's Olaolli Olianipekun ran through and neatly chipped the ball over Police keeper Darren Carmell.

Police started brightly and took the lead on 19 minutes when Lee Wharmby started and finished a move. Wharmby burst through from the half way line and fed the ball to Richard Whitehouse who skipped past the full-back and pulled the ball back for wharmby to force the ball home from close range. Borough went close in the last minute of the first half when a long ball put Olianipekun away and a fierce cross was tipped over by Carmell.

Borough, urged on by first team manager Steve Burr (aka Gaffer), who was playing up front started the second half well and deservedly equalised on 58 minutes. Olianipekun tricked his way to the bye line and an inch perfect cross exposed some slack Police marking and Stefan Beale was left with a simple header to score. Nuneaton then enjoyed their best spell but Carmell was in fine form saving a curling shot from Beale and he then tipped a dipping drive from Scott Harness over the bar.

Wharmby could have won it in normal time for the Police when he picked up a loose ball and burst through the Borough defence but his shot sailed over the bar.

In extra time Nuneaton's Burr got on the end of a long through ball but Carmell stuck a foot out to save a goal bound shot. Then, on 96 minutes Borough gained the lead when Olianipekun dribbled through the Police defence, saw his shot blocked by Carmell but the Nuneaton front man regained possession and slipped the ball to Burr who shot home from close range.

Police started the second period of extra time well and on 110 minutes, substitute striker Gary Davison got on the end of an Andy Reece corner but headed just wide. The Police pressure paid off when, on 117 minutes Wharmby played a neat one-two with substitute Kevin Usher, then kept his cool to slot the ball past Hodgson. Then just as everyone was thinking about penalties, man of the match, Borough's Olianipekun got that late, late winner - game over.
