ICIS MIDLAND COMBINATION
Premier Division

Saturday 9th November 2002

West Midlands Police (2) 3
Kings Heath (2) 2

POLICE NICK STOPPAGE TIME WINNER

A winning goal in stoppage time from substitute Gavin Smith earned the Police their first league win since September.

Kings Heath took the lead on 16 minutes when Jamie Davies crossed to Carl Mear who had time to pull the ball down and fire home from close range. Police equalised two minutes later when David Blake raced clear and saw his shot from the edge of the box saved by keeper Greg Allen but the ball ran loose to Mark Delaney who was left with a simple tap in.

On 29 minutes, Police went in front when a long ball from Paul Webb skipped through the Kings Heath defence to Delaney who despite efforts by the keeper to stop him, kept his feet to slot the ball home from a tight angle. Police went close on 34 minutes when Lee Wharmby lost the ball on the edge of the box and the ball ran loose to Andy Reece who fired a fierce drive which bounced back off the inside of the post.

Kings heath levelled the score on the stroke of half time when Shane Benjamin ran through from the half way line and although Darren Carmell saved his shot, Sean Kidson was on hand to score from close range.

Police had the best of the second half chances and from a Delaney cross on 67 minutes, Blake saw a side footed shot bounce back off the post. With two minutes of normal time remaining Paul Webb raced clear from his own half and a dipping drive beat the 'Kings' keeper but the ball came back off the cross bar.

In the 90th minute it was Kings Heath who almost snatched what could have been the winner when Benjamin set up Mear who failed to net the ball in front of an open goal. West Mids took advantage of the 'Kings' glaring miss and scored the stoppage time winner when Delaney took a quick corner and Gavin Smith scored with a sharp header on the near post.
